ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

English is the language of instruction and communication at ACC

All applicants must demonstrate a command of English sufficient to meet the demands of classroom instruction, discussions, and written assignments.

Demonstrating English proficiency

The following will be acceptable as proof of English proficiency:

  1. Ten consecutive years of residency in Canada, or a country on the test-exempt list, including experience in environments (like a school or workplace) using English consistently.
  2. Successful completion of two years of full-time study in an English language secondary school in Canada, including English (other than EAL) at the Grade 11 and 12 levels.
  3. Successful completion (2.0 GPA or “C“ average) of one full year of coursework at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
  4. Successful completion of English Language secondary or post-secondary education equivalent to 2. or 3. above, in a country which is on the test-exempt list.
  5. An acceptable score on a recognized test of English language proficiency, completed within the last two years.

Testing for English proficiency

The following tests and minimum scores will be considered for admission:

  • TOEFL: 550 paper score, 213 computerized, Internet based (ibt) 79. The results must be submitted directly from the TOEFL testing centre. You will need to provide Assiniboine Community College’s TOEFL registration number, which is 9564. Visit The TOEFL website (www.ets.org/toefl) for more information and the location of the nearest testing centre.
  • CANTEST – 4.5 in reading, 4.5 in listening and 4.0 in writing
  • IELTS – 6.5 based upon Module A or Module B
  • MELAB – minimum score of 80
  • CAEL – minimum score of 60
  • AEPUCE – minimum of 65%

The tests must take place at an official test centre. In each case, the test centre must forward an official copy of the applicant’s score to ACC’s Admissions and Registration department. Students must meet the language requirement before an application is considered complete.

Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT) and/or EAL classes

Some Permanent Residents take a Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT) and/or EAL classes. Although CLB scores can be helpful information for an application to college, the CLBPT is primarily a test for placement in EAL classes. Therefore, we have not established minimum CLB scores for admission. Generally, we accept applicants only when they have achieved high CLB scores, depending on the demands of the specific college program for which they are applying.

If you already have a CLBPT result, include it with your application and we will consider it along with other information about your academic background and experience.

If you have taken EAL classes, we suggest you make an appointment with the Student Advisor for your program by calling 204.725.8723 or 1.800.862.6307 ext 6639. Bring the exit report and/or portfolio from your classes to that appointment.
